About the Sandlot

Joining a team & Getting Involved

Joining a team is easy. The best way to join is to just show up to one of our Saturday Sandlot hangouts. Check the calendar to see when and where we’ll be, bring a glove, come on over and introduce yourself. However, if you want to be more formal, feel free to email us at carolinasandlotcollective@gmail.com.

Who can play?

Everyone and anyone over the age of 21. It doesn’t matter good you are or how much experience you have, you’ll fit right in. Maybe you’ve never played baseball, that’s fine. We have a number of players who had never even played organized baseball before joining the sandlot. We have players who played little league, some that played rec ball, high school ball and even a few former college players.

The great thing is that everyone fits in here. The more experienced players aren’t out here to compete, they’re out here to have fun, teach, and hang out while playing a little baseball. Those that don’t have much experience are treated exactly the same. The whole point is that there is no judgement, in fact, players who are new to baseball are encouraged to come out and just have some fun (or learn a little about the game from some of our more experienced players.)

Rules of the Sandlot

  1. Be cool. No one is out here to prove anything. We’re here to get outside, meet new friends, and get a little excercise.

  2. Winning isn’t everything. Sometimes we have scrimmages or play games, but winning is secondary. If you want intense competition, the Sandlot might not be right for you. Raleigh offers a bunch of great rec leagues for those looking to get their ‘weekend warrior’ on.

  3. Respect one another. We welcome people of all skill sets and from all backgrounds, no one is better than anyone else once you step inside those lines. The Sandlot is all about community and acceptance.

Don’t want to play? Come to hang out.

Don’t feel like playing? Not ready to get out there quite yet? Want to see what it’s all about? Or just want to watch? Then just roll on out to one of our Saturday meet-ups. There are usually a bunch of kids, dogs, significant others and just baseball lovers who come out to watch, socialize and meet new people. Bring a picnic, bring a few cold ones, bring the family. That’s what this is all about.

What do you need to bring?

Really the only thing you NEED to bring is yourself. Usually someone has an extra glove, but if you need one, reach out prior to coming out so we can arrange for someone to bring an extra.

As for what to wear? Well, again, anything is fine, but most players wear a baseball cap, a t-shirt and shorts, sweatpants or baseball pants. Cleats are optional, but most of the regulars wear them. Some however just wear some old sneakers (make sure they aren’t your good ones, they’ll get dirty.)

We have plenty of bats, balls and helmets, but if you have your own, by all means, bring’em.
